What actually happened
The U.S. Postal Service has stopped work on the federal ballot-mail portal that was central to the administration’s new mail-voting rule, its chief said. The move follows the Supreme Court’s September 14 refusal to let the government enforce the rule for the 2026 election. The Court said the government was unlikely to succeed in challenging the lower-court injunction; Justice Kavanaugh said a mid-election rollout would be arbitrary and capricious because election officials lacked time to implement it. The immediate consequence is practical: states can keep their existing mail-ballot systems for November.
